HIGHLIGHTS OF FEBRUARY, 2009 GENERAL MEETING

Co-Prez Ginny called meeting to order @ 11:45 @ Gusta's home. 10 attending.
Creed: Read by host Gusta. Treasurer Carol reported that we sent donation to MAR for cookies for our duo-sponsored 2008 Holiday Party for No. Calif. SO athletes. We are now in the black on our tote bag sales. (We will run ad for future sales in next "Q".)Co-Secty. June will email & snail mail minutes taken today for all members to review & bring corrections/additions to March meeting. "Highlights'"will be posted on our new Blog.
A discussion (tabled @ Jan. meeting) continued on whether to do a RDW website (costs $$s) or a blog attached to national website (Free). Motion was made/carried to do blog. Since we are a small chapter of presently 15 Actives, website idea was tabled until we bring our membership back up hopefully to its all-time high of 36. Marilyn offered to be Blog Mgr.; members agreed.
All RDW members are encouraged to email or snail mail Marilyn anything they might like to post on the blog. This is YOUR voice. Use it for your own musings, photos or as a means to communicate with former roomies in other chapters. As the blog takes off & is read -- since attached to national website -- other chapter members can also contribute by emailing Marilyn their questions or news pertaining to RDW. i.e. If they have an event in Bay Area (such as Interline & Founder's Day) that we can attend.

Kathryn, our sole RDW rep @ Boise SO Winter Games, gave enthusiastic/up-beat report about how rewarding it was & encouraged other members to sign up for next SO. She passed around a bag of leftover C.W./SO pins & Idaho potato pins for all to take & enjoy.
Philanthropy hours should be counted by all RDWers who knitted those blue/white scarves for athletes. So many chapters got out their knitting needles that they had enough to give not only to athletes, but also to other officials & some volunteers. Kathryn/other vols received a beautiful blue silk scarf with SO logo printed on it.
Marilyn gave status of Stewardess/Flight Attendant uniform/history display that she -- as a PCAM member has been working on for 20 years. It's finally going up @ the Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM) @ Charles M. Schulz/Sonoma County Airport. Display will be up & running for coordinated/team-work display of RDW & MAR contributions for a tentative joint chapter luncheon @ the Sky Lounge restaurant when Nat'l. Prez Pam visits the Bay Area chapters. (RDW inviting her to attend our 6/3 theater benefit with joint chapter- tour of PCAM next day & lunch with MAR on beautiful outdoor patio -- watching the planes take off & remembering "The Way We Were" ! Suzy is thinking about donating one of her uniforms.
Raffle prizes are needed ASAP for theater benefit. Will sell raffle tix ahead of time to both those attending & those not. "Need not be present to win" some of our fabulous Wine Country vineyard & restaurant gift cards & other donations. Made mega-bucks on last raffle @ Intermission.
More scrapbook memorabilia was given to triple-hat wearer Gusta, our very recently retired Dutch FA, who's not only Historian for 2008-10, but also "Q" Reporter & our expert digital photog. (See her pics on this Blog.)
There being no further business, meeting was adjourned @ 1:25 to partake of gourmet- cook (4th hat) Gusta's 3 homemade quiches & salad & dessert -- & of course she served wine. After all we are the Wine Country chapter!

RDW UPCOMING MEETINGS & EVENTS

May 16 & 17 - Northern California Special Olympics Games at College of Marin. Volunteers from both RDW & MAR needed. Call or e-mail Co-Prez Ginny.

May 20 - General Meeting/Lunch, 11:30 a.m. at Chris'. Members are to each bring a tray of the appetizers that they plan to make for the June 3rd theater benefit/reception -- so that we can all "test and taste" the contributions prior to the event.

June 3 - Our annual theater benefit "In the Mood" @ the 6th Street Playhouse in Old Railroad Square-Santa Rosa. 7:15 pm Reception; 8:00 p.m. Curtain. Set-up time TBD*. Check out website www.6thstreetplayhouse.com/guides/season-0809/g-k-hardt-theater/in-the-mood/

Our National President Pam Z. will be our honored guest at both 6/3 and 6/4 events. She will spend the night of 6/3 at RDW member Dona's home -post play..

Separate email re: our "ticket-less" reservations and other details re: the play will be sent to members via regular e-mail. The "Y" is in the process of printing marketing flyers for the event.

June 4 - 11:00 a.m. combo MAR/RDW luncheon/ meeting at the Sky Lounge restaurant at STS (Charles M. Schulz/Sonoma County Airport) -- followed by a 2:00 tour of both the outside WWII aircraft and the indoor UAL MAR/RDW Stewardess/Flight Attendant exhibit @ Pacific Coast Air Museum (PCAM). Again with our National President as our guest.

Our National Prez will then travel to Marin and have dinner with the MAR chapter the evening of 6/4. She will spend the night @ MAR Co-Prez Stevie's home. And, will be taken to SFO on 6/5 for return flight to OMA.

June 17 - General meeting has been canceled because of all the above June activity.

July & August - Summer hiatus. No meetings/events except for:

July 10 - Sonoma County Family YMCA Golf Tournament @ Windsor Golf Course. "Y" needs RDWers to help again like last year. Details to follow.

September 16 - General Meeting/Luncheon. Site TBD . Dues for new fiscal year due.

October 1, 2009-September 30, 2010 - New Fiscal Year. Current officers still serving in second term. Bring your dues checks to either September or October meeting. Keep recruiting new members and asking former ones to come back.

RDW GOES BACK TO 1973

The Redwood Empire Chapter of Clipped Wings charteredwith National in February 1973. Our founders were Sharon and Dona (Santa Rosa) and Jean (now DEN). These three women got together and decided to form a chapter in Northern California.

At the start, total chapter membership was 10. The ladies (no men then) were very enthusiastic and immediately went to work to make the chapter known. Many of us "Desperate Housewives" then had little ones and were enthusiastic about getting out of the house to volunteer raising funds for the developmentally disabled. Ideas were soon flowing for fundraisers for both our local and national philanthropies. We sold pointsettias at Christmastime; our "Women's Pins" handcrafted by an artist in Maine who crafts the pins to suit your individual fund-raising; participate in Macy's "Shop for a Cause"; and now our theater benefits.

We also had social gatherings such as family picnics, dinners out with our husbands, partners and friends and our annual Christmas party.

Our membership post 9/11 grew and declined. We expect it to bounce up again. Currently some are now widows; some single again with "Empty Nests" and therefore have more time to volunteer. Meetings are held monthly on the 3rd Wednesday at a host's home or at a restaurant.

Several of our members have attended National and International Special Olympics and volunteered as guides, presenting awards and hosting a parents' reception. Currently we have 15 Active Members; 4 Affiliates, 1 Honorary and 1 Friend of RDW -- totaling 21 participating. Many are also active as civic volunteers in their communities.

RDW was one of the five Bay Area Chapters to host the 1992 convention "Bayview '92" in San Francisco. Our June was overall Chair and our Marilyn produced all publicity, programs and printed matter.

For those of you who do not know where we are located, we are mainly in the Santa Rosa area about 65 miles north of San Francisco; 10 miles south of Healdsburg--covering both Napa and Sonoma Counties; and recruiting members from Mendocino County. We have Active Members in Santa Rosa, Sebastopol, Graton, Sonoma and Napa. Affiliates from MAR and MAL from San Rafael, Novato and Larkspur; Honorary-Sebastopol; and Friend-San Francisco.

We are proud that in 2004, we were one of the first chapters to have a male join. And our Will has the honor of being the first male chapter officer-- serving as RDW VP 2006-2008.

Over the last three years, we have successfully sponsored theater benefits at the 6th Street Playhouse in Santa Rosa's Old Town-Railroad Square. Ticket sales for the play and wine reception -- where our members and husbands/partners make the food and serve it and the wine -- have enabled us to donate over $3,000 each year to our local YMCA Adaptive Aquatics Program and to Special Olympics/Northern California. We were the first chapter to donate to the Flight '93 Shanksville Memorial; others followed suit.

Our next theater benefit is June 3rd's "In the Mood" -- a musical staged at a USO in Italy during WWII. Get ready to listen to the "Oldies but Goodies" from the 40s and jitter-bug at intermission. (See website on 6/3 RDW Calendar for description, and separate box ad for purchasing tickets.)
