Kathryn volunteered at the Special Olympics World Games in Boise on Feb. 11th – 13th. Wednesday was arrival day for many of us and members gathered at the Marriott Hotel for a Wine and Cheese Reception to meet and greet old friends, sign up for volunteer activities, and discuss our “uniform” and duties for our Parents’ Reception/ Dinner. Thursday was a busy day!
Thursday’s morning activities were delayed due to the late arrival of Vice President Joe Biden, who was scheduled to give out the awards for the skating event. We kept busy
helping with the set-up of the tables and decorations for our parents’ reception.
The centerpieces for the tables were old cowboy boots that had been spray painted a “Clipped Wings” blue and were filled with bouquets of daisies. Idaho managed to get a “plug” in with their addition of a small silver buckets filled with---you guessed it---potatoes. The rest of the day was spent working/serving dinner for all the athletes. It was great fun to see all the teams from the different countries in their bright colored jackets. They were so proud of their medals!!
Friday evening was the reception and our uniform was a western theme of jeans or dark slacks, an attractive blue apron with Clipped Wings engraved in yellow on the front, and a matching yellow scarf tied around the neck. We all enjoyed the interaction with the parents and they enjoyed the dinner, the square dancing demonstrations, music, and general atmosphere of fun.
